FFL Requirements

What are the ffl requirements? The requirements for a federal firearms license makes logical sense and are for the public safety.  An FFL license application must be submitted to the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives (BATFE) to obtain a ffl.

  • 21 years of age
  • Established place of business (can be a home business)
  • You must be legal to obtain, posses and use firearms
  • Must not have violated the Gun Control Act
  • Need to Abide by business laws, local and state

The  ffl applicant must be at least 21 years of age. This is the legal age to transact business as an ffl holder.

The applicant must have a place of business that consist of a physical building or commercial retail space. An established business location is required where you can transact business safely.

To buy and sell firearms the applicant must be able to legally possess firearms, no felonies, convictions, etc.

The applicant must not have violated the Gun Control Act.

The business to be conducted under the ffl license is not prohibited by State or local law in the place where the licensed ffl premise is located.

The applicant must also certify the following:

Within 30 days after the application is approved the business with the ffl license will comply with the requirements of Local and State laws.

Business will not be conducted by the applicant under the ffl license application until the requirements of State and local law applicable to the business have been met

The applicant has sent or delivered a form to the chief law enforcement officer where the premises of the business is located notifying the officer that the ffl holder intends to make an ffl application to apply for a ffl license.

Secure gun storage and safety devices will be available at the business premise in which firearms are sold under the ffl license.
